To be an Authoritative DNS server you need 2 static IP addresses.

Preferably on different ISP's so your domain (web site) will always resolve to the correct IP address if the main NS (namespace) goes down.

Port 53 must be open in your router and local firewall for a DNS server to work

For this example we have 5 static IP addresses for the domain of example.com with a IP address of 192.168.10.122

With subdomains of:

mail.example.com: 192.168.10.123
ftp.example.com: 192.168.10.124
www.example.com: 192.168.10.125
afp.example.com: 192.168.10.126

+ 1 more static IP address, preferably on another ISP for your secondary DNS server. (ask a friend)

anotherdomain.com: 10.0.10.56

Please note IP addresses shown are for illustration purpose only.
